Holiday Safety Tips
Are you hitting the road this holiday for that well-deserved break you have been planning and dreaming about for months? Well, whether you’re a seasoned traveller, or you’re going away for the first time, there are some important precautions to take before you embark on your trip.
BEFORE YOU GO
Before you leave your home, you should:
- Close all the windows and lock all the doors.
- Check that your alarm system is working and run a test with your security company.
- If you have an electric fence or beams, cut away any plants or trees that may interfere and cause false alarms.
- Unplug all unnecessary appliances, such as your TV, kettle and home computer.
- Switch your geyser off and close any gas valves.
- Set up an automatic timer for your indoor and outdoor lights.
- Tell your family and close friends where you are heading and when they can expect you back. Also ask them to check in on your property every now and again, and to remove any items that may indicate that you are away, such as newspaper deliveries.
- Give someone you trust a spare key to your home. Don’t leave it in a plant or under a door mat.
- Lock all tools away. This can be used to gain entry to your house.
- Lock away any valuables, such as jewellery, and ensure it is out of plain sight. If you can, put it in a safety deposit box.
- Park your car out of sight and if possible, behind a closed garage door.
- Do not broadcast your vacation plans on social media.
In the event you are planning on spoiling yourself with a staycation, don’t get too complacent! Remember to keep the security gates locked and property secure by activating your beams outside when you are in your house. Tear down gift boxes before putting them in the trash. You don’t want to advertise what is available in your home.
BE SAFE WHILE SHOPPING
If you are going out shopping, ensure to:
- Stay alert and avoid distractions, like your phone.
- Park in a well-lit area.
- Manually check that your vehicle is locked before leaving.
- Have your keys ready before you go to your car.
- Keep valuables out of sight, or in your boot.
- Know where the nearest exit is in case of an emergency.
- Keep an eye out for anything that looks out of the ordinary.
- Keep receipts of your purchases to prove the purchase.
